A component symbol represents a technical element. A reference numeral identifies a part discussed in the application. A figure label identifies the view itself. Keep these roles distinct so the reader does not have to guess whether a number names a component, a drawing sheet or a complete figure.
Use Conventional Symbols Clearly
The USPTO guide’s drawing-symbol section explains that appropriate graphic symbols may represent conventional elements, subject to the Office’s approval. When a representation is unclear, resolve the meaning with the technical author and supervising practitioner rather than introducing an unexplained abbreviation.
Build a Component Reference List
