Artificial intelligence can support legal research by suggesting search terms, organizing documents and producing draft summaries. Its usefulness depends on the task, source access and verification process. Treat generated statements and citations as material to check, not as authority to rely on without reading the underlying law.
Where AI Can Help a Legal Research Workflow
Use an approved tool to turn a defined issue into a preliminary research plan, identify alternative terminology or organize notes from reviewed sources. For a long document, ask for an issue outline linked to passages, then check those passages yourself. Keep the jurisdiction, relevant date and question explicit.
Verify Every Authority and Proposition
Open the cited case, statute or regulation in a reliable source. Confirm that it exists, says what the summary claims, applies to the relevant jurisdiction and remains suitable for the question. Check quotations, pinpoint references, procedural history and subsequent treatment as appropriate. A plausible case name is not evidence of accuracy.
Maintain a research table with the proposition, authority, relevant passage, verification status and reviewer. If a citation cannot be found or its context differs, flag it and continue from verified sources rather than trying to repair an unsupported conclusion by guesswork.
Protect Confidentiality Before Entering Material
Confirm the firm’s approved tools, data-handling arrangements and permitted inputs before using client information. Assess retention, access and disclosure risks with the responsible team. Use anonymized or appropriately limited material where suitable, and address consent and communication requirements under applicable rules.
The ABA’s Formal Opinion 512 overview discusses competence, confidentiality, communication and fees. It is general U.S. model-rule guidance; check the binding professional rules and court requirements relevant to the work.
Measure Quality Alongside Time Saved
Test a representative research task with a reviewed reference answer. Compare missed issues, unsupported propositions, citation errors, verification time and total turnaround. A fast first draft can require substantial correction. Avoid claiming guaranteed accuracy, lower cost or dependable case-outcome predictions without evidence.
Keep Human Review and Clear Ownership
Assign a reviewer for final legal conclusions and maintain a record of sources and changes. Separate research assistance from advice delivered to a client or filed with a court. Document unresolved limitations in the handover rather than allowing a fluent summary to conceal them.
