Legal research outsourcing means assigning a defined research brief to an external support team. A useful engagement specifies the legal question, jurisdiction, relevant date, permitted sources and expected deliverable. It also identifies the lawyer responsible for reviewing and using the work. Clear boundaries matter more than assuming every research task is routine.
Legal Research and Legal Analysis
Research identifies and organises relevant authorities and supporting material. Analysis evaluates that material in the context of the facts and the legal question. The two often overlap and both can involve judgment. Define the expected output and review responsibilities instead of relying on a simple rule that one category can always be delegated and the other cannot.
Prepare a Research Brief
Provide the question, relevant jurisdiction, factual assumptions, time limits and intended use. Specify the sources the team may access and any exclusions. Agree whether you need a source list, case summaries, a research note or another format. Identify who will answer questions when the brief is ambiguous.
Agree Quality and Citation Checks
Ask the researcher to distinguish facts, authorities, assumptions and unresolved questions. Require traceable citations and the date of the research. Agree how authority status and scope limitations will be checked. A supervising lawyer should review the deliverable before it informs advice, a filing or another client decision.
Use a Pilot Before Expanding
Begin with a representative brief and evaluate relevance, source traceability, clarity, turnaround and the amount of reviewer rework. Discuss the causes of revisions and refine the instructions before increasing volume. A low quoted hourly rate is not enough to establish the full cost or quality of an engagement.
Protect the Matter Workflow
Agree confidentiality, access permissions, document handling and escalation arrangements before sharing files. Keep task ownership and review status visible. If a source cannot be accessed or the team finds conflicting information, require the issue to be raised rather than silently omitted.
